School Budget Passes, but the Music Program Survives on a Technicality

The valley school board approved its budget for the coming year after a session that stretched past midnight, but the night’s real drama was over a line item worth a fraction of the total: the middle-school music program, which had been marked for elimination and was restored only after a parent, reading the spreadsheet aloud during public comment, pointed out an apparent double-count in the transportation column.

The error that saved the strings

According to the correction acknowledged from the dais, a busing cost had been entered in two places, inflating the shortfall the board was trying to close. Once removed, the gap narrowed enough that trustees could fund the music position without touching classroom aides.

  • Overall budget approved after three separate amendments
  • Middle-school music restored following the corrected figure
  • A promised outside review of the budgeting software

Trustees thanked the parent by name from the dais, then spent several uncomfortable minutes discussing how a duplicated figure had made it into the printed packet in the first place. The business office promised a fuller reconciliation before the next cycle.

The lesson, one trustee said, was that the public reads the fine print. On this evidence, the public reads it better than the software does.
