Reader Letters: On Speed Bumps, Streetlights, and the Farmers Market Parking Fight

Our mailbag filled up this week, mostly with two subjects: the traffic near the elementary school and the reshuffled parking at the Saturday market. As always, letters are lightly edited for length and checked for basic accuracy. Names and neighborhoods are printed with the writers’ permission.

Traffic calming, or a jarring commute?

A cluster of letters backed the proposed speed bumps on the school approach, several from writers who described near-misses at drop-off time. A smaller group objected, arguing the bumps would push cut-through traffic onto quieter side streets and slow the fire response from the north station.

  • Several readers asked for a crossing guard before any pavement work
  • One writer suggested a trial with temporary bumps first
  • Two questioned whether the speed data justifies the cost

On the market, the mood was cooler. Vendors and shoppers alike wrote to say the new one-way loop has created a bottleneck at the entrance, and that the loss of curbside spots has hit older customers hardest. The market association tells us it is reviewing the layout after only three weeks.

Keep them coming. If you want your view in next week’s column, write in under 400 words and sign it. We would rather print a sharp disagreement than a flattering one.
